Some of the people Tony Verebes held nearest and dearest. -a photo sadly taken at his memorial.
Twenty years ago I “met” Tony Verebes’ photos before I actually met him. When I first started working at the Topanga Messenger I not only developed and printed my own black and white film, but that of others who went out on assignment for the paper. When I made the proof sheet of the first roll of Tony’s, I couldn’t believe that someone who simply went out to take a portrait of our local firefighters not only did it on medium format film which is far more difficult, but also shot them like beautiful art pieces.
Well, the photos were stunning and I immediately felt like such a novice. I even tried to console myself by thinking if he was so skilled he might be pompous or not even nice. That of course was so far from the truth. He couldn’t have been more personable and laid-back and always open to talking about photography with me. I realized that a good person with great talent never ceases to enrich your life and make you a better version of yourself. That was definitely Tony.
